This was scary! I'd wanted to try drawing outside, in a public space for ages, but I just wasn't brave enough. Yet. Today, I brought my art journal and some not much used supplies (crayons and felt tips) to Artis Zoo. I wasn't sure they were going to leave the bag I carried, but bringing them made me feel good :)
Until we got to the Butterfly Pavilion, where it's nice and tropical, and I could sit down on the floor. This is not necessarily what I wanted to draw - I would have prefered to draw an animal, but this was the spot we chose to sit, so this was the stuff that ended up in my journal :) I brought paper for Squirt too, and we sat drawing together, which was awesome! It was cool to hear people whisper that it was a great idea!
I'm totally impressed with myself :) I'll be doing more of this! I'm grateful that today I plucked up courage and drew in a public space, with unfamiliar media & a subject I wouldn't have picked naturally. I stepped outside my comfort zone in a big way, and it was amazing! I really needed something like this right now :)
Hooray for you and squirt! It IS scary! Here’s to many more ‘en plein air’ excursions and pushing our comfort zones! (Cute sketch.)
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!!! Good for you sweetie!

Yay! It IS a good idea! I am inspired to try it too!
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely courageous Yvonne! :-)
ReplyDeletei love your drawings ! ıt's really good idea and really inspired !
ReplyDeletecan i do it ??? let's see.. :)
good on you.. I think that's the key to just give ourselves a little push to what we want to do!.. lovely picture!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Yvonne (and Squirt of course), That is a biggie! Next time an animal then. well done for feeling the fear and doing it anyway!xx
ReplyDeleteFabulosity Yvonne! I love your sketch and understand the drawing in public thing. It gets easier and more fun :-)
ReplyDeleteOk, now this is just awesome! I did this recently at a coffee shop. In fact, I brought both my boys to one of my favorite coffee shops in my college town. We drew together and it was SO much fun. We just went to the zoo today and it never ever occurred to me to try something like this there. What a brilliant idea, Yvonne. I'm going to remember this and if the weather holds up I'd like to draw with my boys somewhere - like the park. How fun. LOVE it!
ReplyDeletePhantastic drawing!!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I am doing this, too...but it´s always far out of my comfort zone and the results are never what I´d like them to be.
This year in june I joined an activity offered by a museum here in Madrid to go out with an artist drawing in the streets of the city. That was really challenging! Our sketchbooks where later shown as an exhibition in the museum! That was cool, although I even didn´t tell any of my friends, because I didn´t like my drawings.
So stay impressed with yourself... well done, I say! I have seen people sketching in Artis Zoo and have always admired their courage to do so, because people (me included) cannot resist the temptation to have a peek at what they are drawing. Must be so discomforting.
ReplyDeleteI also love the pic of you and your son, the chemistry exuding from the photo is just so, so good. Keep rocking!!! Cheers, Anne
Yay! Looks like you are on a roll stepping out of your comfort zone! The drawing is great and hopefully there will be more of these sessions in public places. I love drawing outside (or inside; cafes, public transport, wherever) so if you ever want(creative) company (apart for squirt of course) when you go to Artis Zoo, let me know!
ReplyDeleteSuch an inspiring post. I feel so awkward about drawing in public too but this was a lovely way to do it. Maybe I'll bring my materials next time I take little Miss P to the zoo!
